Have you ever wondered how your favorite album came about?
The journey from initial idea to publication is a long journey that involves much more than meets the eye. Today we're taking a look behind the scenes and showing you everything that goes into producing an album.
- The initial idea and songwriting
Inspiration is often the first step to creating an album. Artists draw their inspiration from a wide variety of sources — personal experiences, social topics or simply from a spontaneous melody in their heads. As soon as the idea comes up, the songwriting starts. This can be a solitary process where the artist develops lyrics and melodies, or a collaborative one where multiple songwriters work together. Would you like to know more about songwriting? Here You can find a blog article about it. - The pre-production
In pre-production, the written songs are roughly recorded to get an idea of what they'll sound like. Here, artists often experiment with different arrangements and sounds. It's a phase of trial and error to ensure that every song reaches the best potential possible. - The studio and recording
As soon as the songs are finished, it's off to the studio. This is a crucial step where professional recording equipment and technicians come into play. Each song is recorded individually, often in multiple takes, to get the best possible version. This could take days or even weeks, depending on the complexity and number of tracks on the album. - Mixing and mastering
The recordings are followed by mixing. Here, the various recorded tracks (vocals, instruments, effects) are brought together and optimized in terms of sound. The mixing engineer ensures that everything is well balanced and that the songs sound powerful and clear. This is followed by mastering, which brings the entire album to uniform volume and quality. This ensures that the album sounds good on all playback devices. - The artwork and packaging
An album is not just music — it is a complete work. This includes the artwork. Artists and designers work together to create a visual concept that reflects the album's music and message. This includes the album cover, booklet, and other graphic elements that are part of the physical or digital release. On Plactron, artists can easily create or edit a new booklet with the booklet maker. - Publishing and promotion
After the album is completed, the promotion begins. This involves uncoupling singles, producing music videos and giving interviews. Social media plays a big part in promoting to make fans aware of the upcoming album and get them involved. The release day is then the grand finale — and at the same time the beginning, because now it's time to present the album live and go on tour.
